Why Nether travel is worth the math

One block in the Nether covers eight in the Overworld, so a short walk through the Nether can cross a huge distance up top. That 8:1 ratio is the whole reason players build Nether hubs: link a network of portals in the Nether and you can hop between far-flung Overworld bases in a fraction of the travel time. The catch is that the coordinates only line up if you build the far portal in the right place — that's what this calculator is for. Enter the coordinates of a portal you already have, and it gives you the exact block to build its partner at.

Build a linked portal pair, step by step

  1. Build and light your first portal, then open the debug screen (F3) to read its exact X, Y and Z.
  2. Convert those numbers with the calculator above — pick the direction that matches where you built the first portal.
  3. Travel to the other dimension and go to the converted X and Z (Y stays the same). Use /tp with the copy button, or walk it.
  4. Build the second portal right there and light it. Because you placed it on the exact converted block, stepping back through links the pair permanently.

Why portals mislink — and how to prevent it

When you step through a portal, the game doesn't always make a fresh one on the far side. It first searches for an existing portal near the converted coordinates — a 128-block radius in the Overworld, or 16 blocks in the Nether — and links to that instead. Only if it finds nothing does it build a new portal, within 16 blocks of the target.

That search is why portals seem to “steal” each other's links. Two Overworld portals closer than 256 blocks apart convert to Nether targets within 16 blocks of each other, so both can grab the same Nether portal. The usual fixes: build each destination portal by hand at the calculated block before traveling; keep separate Overworld portals more than 256 blocks apart (32 blocks in the Nether); and tear down any stray auto-generated portals that spawned off-target on an earlier trip.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate Nether portal coordinates?

Divide your Overworld X and Z by 8 to get the Nether coordinates, or multiply your Nether X and Z by 8 to get the Overworld ones. The Y (height) coordinate stays exactly the same in both directions. Minecraft rounds the Overworld→Nether result down to the nearest block, which is what the calculator above does for you.

Does the Y coordinate change between the Overworld and the Nether?

No. Only the horizontal X and Z coordinates scale 8:1 between dimensions — Y is identical in both. A portal at Y=64 in the Overworld links to Y=64 in the Nether. If your Overworld height is outside the Nether's buildable range of 0–127, the game places the portal at the nearest valid height instead.

Why do two of my portals link to the same place?

When you travel, the game looks for an existing portal near the converted coordinates before building a new one — a 128-block radius in the Overworld, 16 blocks in the Nether. Two Overworld portals closer than 256 blocks apart (32 blocks apart in the Nether) can fall inside each other's search area and end up sharing one link. Space them out, or build each destination portal by hand so the game links to the one you want.

How do I stop a portal from linking to the wrong one?

Build the destination portal manually at the calculated coordinates before you ever travel through. If you just step through and let the game auto-generate the far portal, it can spawn offset from the ideal spot — or link to an older portal or an auto-generated one nearby. Building both ends yourself at the exact converted block gives you a predictable, permanent link.

How far apart do Nether portals need to be to stay separate?

More than 16 blocks apart in the Nether guarantees they won't share a link on the Nether side, and more than 256 blocks apart in the Overworld keeps their Nether targets clear of each other. For a Nether hub with several portals, keep the Nether-side frames at least 32 blocks apart in both X and Z and you'll never get a crossed wire.

Does the 8:1 ratio work on Bedrock Edition too?

Yes — the Overworld-to-Nether coordinate ratio is 1:8 on both Java and Bedrock, and Y is unscaled on both, so the calculator's math is correct for either edition. The exact portal-search sizes are a Java detail, but the coordinate conversion you use to plan a link is identical.
