Minecraft Spawners & Dungeon Rooms
How monster spawners and the cobblestone dungeon rooms that hold them actually work — the spawn rates, the farm build, and the honest reason no seed finder can drop a pin on one.
A dungeon in Minecraft is a small cobblestone-and-mossy-cobblestone room buried underground, with a monster spawner in the middle and a chest or two of rare loot — saddles, name tags, enchanted books and music discs. The spawner is the prize: left running, it pumps out the same mob forever, which makes it the backbone of the earliest XP and drop farms. But dungeons are a worldgen feature, not a seed-placed structure, so no finder can tell you where one is — you find them by caving. Here's exactly how the spawner behaves once you do.

Finding a dungeon
Because dungeons aren't placed by the seed, finding one is about exploration, not coordinates. They generate throughout the Overworld underground, so the best approach is to cave widely and stay alert: a hidden dungeon usually announces itself as a cluster of zombie groans, bone rattles or spider hisses coming from behind stone, and the mossy cobblestone gives it away once you break through. If you just want a reliable mob farm from your seed instead, a trial chamber is a real structure you can locate, and a mineshaft reliably comes with a cave spider spawner.
Building a spawner farm
The first rule is not to break the spawner — it drops nothing and can't be moved, so a dungeon is a one-time gift you build around. Torch the room to stop it spawning while you work, then hollow out a dark chamber where mobs are funneled to a single kill spot. Since the spawner only runs while a player is within 16 blocks, your AFK platform has to sit inside that radius. A zombie or skeleton dungeon converted this way is the classic first XP farm — steady levels for enchanting, plus bones, arrows and rotten flesh.
Frequently asked questions
Can you find dungeons or spawners from a seed?
No. Monster rooms — the cobblestone dungeons that hold a spawner — are a worldgen feature scattered when chunks generate, not a seed-placed structure like a village or a monument. That means no seed map or finder can compute their positions, the same way ore veins can't be pinpointed. The honest way to find them is caving: they generate underground throughout the Overworld, so explore cave systems and listen for clustered mob sounds coming from behind a wall.
What's the difference between a dungeon spawner and a trial spawner?
A classic dungeon uses a standard monster spawner — a caged block that spawns the same mob endlessly whenever a player is near, and can be turned into a farm. Trial chambers, added in 1.21, use trial spawners instead: a different block that spawns a fixed wave of mobs once per player, drops rewards, then goes dormant. Trial chambers are a real structure, so unlike dungeons you can locate them from your seed.
How do I turn a spawner into an XP farm?
Don't break it — a spawner drops nothing and can't be picked up. Instead, light up the room fully so it stops spawning while you build, then construct a dark collection chamber around it where mobs drop into a killing spot. The spawner only runs while a player is within 16 blocks, so your AFK point has to sit inside that sphere. Zombie and skeleton dungeons make the best early farms for XP and drops.
How often does a spawner spawn mobs?
Once a player is within 16 blocks, the spawner tries to spawn up to four mobs at random points nearby, then waits 200 to 799 ticks — 10 to just under 40 seconds — before trying again. If six or more mobs of its type are already packed into a 9×9×9 area around it, it skips the attempt, which is why an efficient farm funnels mobs away quickly.
Where else do spawners generate?
Besides dungeons, cave spider spawners generate inside the cobweb-choked corridors of abandoned mineshafts — you can find the nearest mineshaft from your seed with the mineshaft finder. Trial chambers use their own trial spawners. Between dungeons, mineshafts and trial chambers, those are the places a spawner shows up naturally.
