Minecraft Ore Levels

The exact height to mine every ore in Java 1.18–1.21 — diamond peaks at Y=-59, copper at Y=43, emerald only in the mountains. These are worldgen constants, identical in every world, so they're faithful to the game by construction.

Where each ore generates by height in Java 1.18+. The taller the shape at a given level, the more common the ore is there; the vertical line marks its peak. The tinted band left of Y=0 is the deepslate layer where diamond and redstone concentrate.

One thing no tool can do is point you at a specific diamond. Structures are placed by your seed and can be mapped exactly, but ore veins are scattered when each chunk generates — a separate process a seed map doesn't compute. What is fixed is the distribution above: every ore's Y-range and peak is the same in every world on a given version. Mine at the right height and you tilt the odds as far as they'll go. For an actual head start on diamonds, drop into a mineshaft — its tunnels already cut through the deepslate where they spawn.

Ore-by-ore tips

Diamond· best at Y -59 to -54
Most common at the very bottom of the world and increasingly so below Y=0 since 1.20.2. Many players mine at Y=-54 instead of -59 — a hair less ore, but a few blocks above the worst of the lava lakes.
Redstone· best at Y -59
Follows the same curve as diamond, so a single branch mine around Y=-58 nets both at once — the most efficient depth in the game.
Lapis Lazuli· best at Y -2
Peaks near sea-level depth, so it often turns up on the way down to diamond level. A second, smaller batch is spread thinly all the way to the world bottom.
Gold· best at Y -18 (badlands: surface)
Badlands (mesa) biomes generate 20 extra gold blobs between Y=32 and Y=79, often near the surface — by far the fastest place to stockpile gold.
Copper· best at Y 43 to 48
Dripstone Caves generate much larger copper veins than anywhere else, so a dripstone cave network is the quickest way to fill a chest.
Iron· best at Y 16 (or mountain peaks)
Alongside this underground band, huge iron deposits generate in mountain biomes above Y=80 — often visible in exposed cliffs, the easiest early iron in the game.
Coal· best at Y 96 (or any hillside)
Ranges nearly the whole world height and is exposed all over mountain and hill cliffs, so it's rarely worth mining for on purpose.
Emerald· best at Y 85 (mountains only)
The only ore locked to specific biomes — it generates exclusively in mountain and windswept-hills biomes, and nowhere else no matter how deep you dig. Often exposed in the rock of jagged and frozen peaks.

Playing an older version (before 1.18)?

Before the Caves & Cliffs update the world bottomed out at Y=0 and ores generated in flat bands rather than triangles. Diamonds were most common at Y=11 — the level veteran players still recite — spread evenly from Y=1 to 15. If your world was created on 1.16 or 1.17, mine at Y=11 for diamonds and Y=11–12 for redstone instead of the deepslate levels above.

What is the best Y level for diamonds in Minecraft?

In Java 1.18 and later, diamonds are most common at Y=-59, right above the bedrock floor. Can a tool find the exact diamonds in my seed?

No — and any tool claiming to is guessing. Structures like villages and mineshafts are placed by the seed and can be predicted exactly, but ore veins are scattered when each chunk generates, through a separate process no seed-mapper computes. What is fixed is the distribution: the Y-levels on this page are identical in every world on a given version, so mining at the right height is the real, honest edge. A mineshaft is the closest thing to a shortcut, because its tunnels already cut through diamond-depth stone.

Did ore levels change in 1.18?

Yes, dramatically. The Caves & Cliffs update (1.18) dropped the world bottom to Y=-64 and replaced the old flat ore bands with the triangle distributions shown above — diamonds moved from the classic Y=11 down to a Y=-59 peak. The shape has stayed the same across 1.18, 1.19, 1.20 and 1.21, so this chart is current.

Why do I keep finding ore near lava?

That's by design at diamond depth — the deepslate layer below Y=0 is riddled with lava lakes. Carry fire resistance or a water bucket, mine at Y=-54 to stay just above most of them, and never dig straight down. Ore exposed to air is also removed during generation, so the diamonds you see in a cave wall are the ones that survived — caving is often faster than strip mining.

Where do I find emeralds?

Emeralds are the one ore locked to specific biomes — they generate only in mountain and windswept-hills biomes, peaking around Y=85, and nowhere else no matter how deep you dig. Look in jagged peaks, frozen peaks, snowy slopes, stony peaks, meadows and groves, often exposed right in the rock face.

What's the fastest way to get copper, gold or iron?

Copper generates its biggest veins in dripstone caves (peak Y=43). Gold is densest at Y=-18, but badlands biomes add extra gold near the surface — the quickest source in the game. Iron peaks at Y=16 underground, yet the huge deposits exposed in mountain cliffs above Y=80 are usually the easier early haul.
